
Retail sales rose month to month in May in Europe, but remain negative from the same month a year earlier, the data office Eurostat said Wednesday. Retail rose 1 percent in the 17-member eurozone from April to May and 1.2 percent in the 27-member European Union. But from May 2012, the volume of sales is down 0.1 percent in the eurozone, while it rose 0.5 percent in the EU, the data office said. The annual decline for the eurozone came in better than expected. Economists had predicted a 2 percent decline in sales volume from May 2012 in the region.
