Pratt and Whitney wins 1000 engine orders in Paris

US jet engine maker Pratt & Whitney said on Thursday that it had booked orders for more than 1,000 engines at the Paris Air Show and remained the leading supplier for the European Airbus A320neo jet. The company, a division of United Technologies Corp., said that the figure, which included options, comprised sales of its Pure Power, IAE V2500 and PW4000 engines. The PW1100G-JM engine being developed to power the Airbus A320neo, a more fuel-efficient version of the Airbus company's best-selling airliner, made its first test flight in May, a statement noted. With orders and options for more than 4,500 engines from more than 40 clients worldwide, Pratt and Whitney will "maintain its lead position of more than 50 percent of Airbus A320neo engine orders," the statement said. The company's main rival, CFM which is owned by the French group Safran and US partner General Electric, also claims to cover more than 50 percent of the market for single aisle aircraft. Meanwhile, Pratt & Whitney said it had also delivered 100 engines for the US F-35 Lightning II jet fighters, an aircraft with vertical take-off and landing capabilities being developed for use by the US armed forces and its allies.
