The Japanese government has granted a financial aid of 40 million U.S. dollars to help Myanmar establish three weather radars and 30 automatic weather observation stations to strengthen the early warning system, official media reported Wednesday. The four-year project will be implemented from 2014 and 2017, Myanmar Transport Minister U Nyan Tun Aung told a hydromet observation and information system modernization project preparation workshop in Nay Pyi Taw, said the New Light of Myanmar. U Nyan Tun Aung disclosed that besides Japan, the World Bank is also supporting Myanmar by taking the initiative to equip the hydromet center with advanced equipment and technique worth 35 million dollars. The workshop also discussed proposed Ayeyawaddy integrated river basin management project, it said. According to earlier reports, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has helped Myanmar install radar system in Yangon, Mandalay and Kyaukphyu for upgrading weather forecast work.
