Iranian President Hassan Rohani said Sunday his country is ready to restore economic ties with the European Union and open dialogue on all issues of common concern. During his meeting with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton, President Rohani said his government adopts a constructive approach to relations with all countries, particularly the EU countries, based on mutual respect and common interests. He welcomed the visit of the EU foreign policy chief to Tehran as indication of the EU adoption of a new approach to relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran. President Rohani called for opening new horizons of cooperation with the EU countries alongside with the dialogue on Iran's nuclear program. While working together to advance the nuclear talks, the two sides can work on regional issues such the combat against terrorism and drug trafficking, as well as the developments in Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq, he said. On her part, Ashton said her visit is an EU goodwill gesture towards Tehran and a first step towards new talks with Iran on issues other than the nuclear dossier. The EU is determined to improve ties with Iran, she said, affirming the importance of Iran's regional influence. She added that she outlined with the Iranian leaders the priorities of cooperation in the economic and commercial fields. Ashton arrived here last night on an official visit, her first since 2008, at the invitation of Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif who held talks with her earlier today.
