Athens - ANSA

Greece is paralyzed again by a general strike of 24 hours proclaimed by the main trade unions, protesting against the new plan of austerity, agreed by the government and representatives of the country's international creditors. Cuts to the state budget of 11.5 billion euro for the 2013-2014 period are expected. During the day a series of events will trake place in all the most important Greek cities. In Athens a demonstration in the central square of Pedion tou Areos is under way, organized by the two biggest unions, GSEE and ADEDY, which cover respectively the workers in the public sector and the private sector, while the Pame, the union close to the Communist Party, organized an event at 10.30 am, in the central Piazza Omonia. Civil servants, workers from Inland Revenue and Customs, from local authorities, professionals, merchants, are on strike, while journalists will refrain from working from 11am till 15pm. The public transport will stop for the whole day, except the suburban trains, that will run from 9am up to 9pm, to facilitate the movement of those who want to join the demonstrations. Meanwhile, sources close to the Greek unions note that the reactions to the government's plan will probably continue with a new general strike at the beginning of October.
