Washington - UPI

Companies, non-profits and government bodies will provide another 90,000 paid summer jobs to disadvantaged U.S. youth, the White House said Wednesday. In addition to the paid jobs, 20,000 other summer opportunities such as mentorships, internships and other training opportunities have been arranged, the White House said in a release. The 110,000 commitments, which involve 95 companies and non-profits, three cities, two federal agencies and the White House are in addition to 180,000 opportunities announced during the January kickoff of the Summer Jobs+ initiative. The goal then was to secure 250,000 jobs and other summer opportunities for young people ages 16-24. "In January, we called on the private and public sectors to help us address record unemployment among America's youth," President Obama said in the release. "Today, we are proud to announce that cities, federal agencies, non-profits and companies from across the country have come together to provide hundreds of thousands of summer jobs and employment opportunities for our young people."
