
The Italian Government and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on Thursday affirmed significance of the planned "Expo Milan 2015." Josأ© Graziano da Silva, FAO Director General, said the forecast exhibition and the Second International Conference on Nutrition, due in November, would contribute to global efforts for sustainable development for mankind.
Speaking at a round-table held in Milan today, he called for robust action to "create a world free of excessive or shortage of food," urging for wide-scale action to secure "food equally" for all peoples of the globe, in support of sustainable development at the social and economic levels.
"Hunger and malnutrition are among major catastrophes prevailing in our world," he said, noting that up to 840 million people suffer from continuous hunger, 160 million children suffer from growth disability, two billion suffer from various forms of malnutrition causing 45 percent of deaths among children.
This painful situation is not due to food shortage, but obstacles facing individuals in all parts of the glove to have access to sufficient food, da Silva said
