Head of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament Gianni Pittella hailed the ongoing economic reforms in Egypt.
This came during Pittella’s meeting with President Abdel Fattah El Sisi in which he asserted Egypt’s leading role in solving the disputes in the region.
In a press conference on Saturday, Pittella said he met with a number of Egyptian officials including the president and representatives of a number of NGOs.
Pittella also extended condolences over the recent deadly terrorist attack in Sinai, asserting his rejection to all sorts of terrorism and underling the support to Egypt in combating terrorism.
He asserted the importance of cooperation between Egypt and the EU in light of efforts exerted by Cairo to bring about stability in the country.
He said the EU looks forward to achieving progress in the field of rights and freedoms to coincide with the advance scored in the economic field.
Meanwhile, Pittella expressed his concern over two European citizens who were detained in Egypt’s prisons.
He said that he urged Sisi to release them without interfering in judiciary’s role.
