U.S. stocks finished lower on Tuesday, as an economic report on the U.S. trade deficit highlighted concerns about weakness in global economic activity. The dollar declined against the euro and the yen. Light sweet crude oil for June delivery rose to $93.54 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Gold futures rose to $1,397.50. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 76.49, or 0.5 percent, to 15,177.54. The broader Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell 9.04, or 0.6 percent, to 1,631.38. The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index fell 20.11, or 0.6 percent, to 3,445.26.
