Dow, S&P retreat from highs, Nasdaq up

U.S. stocks pared earlier gains to end in mixed territory on Wednesday, as investors digested a bunch of mixed earnings reports from major U.S. companies. The Dow nearly lost 0.2 percent and the S&P 500 ticked down 0.4 percent, while the Nasdaq edged up less than 0.1 percent.
