
Hyundai Motor Co. and its smaller affiliate Kia Motors Corp. had the highest home country production ratio among major global carmakers in 2014, industry data showed Tuesday.
According to the data by FOURIN, a Japanese car research firm, the two Korean carmakers produced a combined 8 million cars last year, of which they churned out 3.59 million units in their home country.
This represented a 44.8 percent home country production ratio, the highest among nine carmakers whose global productions exceeded 3 million units in 2014.
In terms of domestic production, Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors came in second following Toyota, which produced 4.21 million units in Japan for a 40.1 percent home country production ratio.
Their home production ratios were much higher than the group average of 31.2 percent, the data showed.
Among U.S. carmakers, Ford ranked first by manufacturing 38.4 percent of its vehicles in its home country. Japan's Nissan recorded a home production ratio of 18.9 percent, the lowest among the carmakers surveyed.
