French energy giant EDF said Tuesday it will construct a 123-megawatt wind farm in Texas for the manufacturing of Procter & Gamble's laundry, dish-washing and other household cleaning products.
The link-up with the US group was revealed after Procter & Gamble joined 80 other firms Monday at the White House to sign the "American Business Act on Climate Pledge" committing them to concrete global warming mitigation measures.
The wind farm, designed to generate enough electricity to wash one million laundry loads, will come on stream by the end of next year in Cooke County in northeast Texas.
EDF (Electricite de France) said in a statement it had agreed to a long-term deal which "will allow P&G to avoid emitting more than 200,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide CO2 a year."
The firms signing up to the American Business Act on Climate Pledge are seeking to enable delivery of 30 percent renewable energy power to their plants worldwide by 2020 in a bid to tackle climate change.
"We welcome this partnership with Procter & Gamble, a key industrial player in the US economy and the daily lives of millions of people," said Antoine Cahuzac, CEO of the renewable energies division of EDF, the world’s largest electricity producer.
"It shows our commitment to provide our clients with low carbon, competitive and durable electricity."
