Emirates Aluminium (EMAL) further heightened its commitment to workplace safety for employees with an expanded ‘EHS Representatives Program: Developing EHS leaders on the shop floor’ for 2013. First launched in 2010 and now in its fourth year, employees receive training based on global best practice to make them accountable for shop floor safety and creating an evolving culture of continuous improvement for EMAL Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) performance. Seventy seven (77) EMAL employees are being trained this year to join the 100 EHS representatives that have already graduated from the program since its inception. Selected employees undergo yearlong comprehensive training together with Individual Development Plans, supported by the EHS Department to ensure achievement of overall EMAL targets and individual EHS development. EMAL EHS instructors are fully certified to train by National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) Health & Safety at Work, and the NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety. Saeed Fadhel Al Mazrooei, EMAL’s President and CEO, said: “Despite an already excellent record of EHS, EMAL is not content to rest on its laurels when it comes to living EMAL’s Core Value of 'Safety First, Last, and Always'. The achievements we have made so far will encourage and drive us forward as we continue to safely and responsibly accomplish the ambitious goals we have set for ourselves." NEBOSH accreditation was awarded by the internationally recognised National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) after following a rigorous assessment process. Accreditation was given for two training courses: Health and Safety at Work and International General Certificate for Health and Safety. EMAL attained “excellent training capability” from the independent assessors, which complies with strict international standards. With this accreditation EMAL is the first aluminium producer globally and the first manufacturing industry in the GCC to be NEBOSH accredited. EMAL has a robust EHS performance, which includes a record 1.5 million tonnes of hot metal produced in just 2 and a half years achieved with over 10 million work-hours with zero Lost Time Injuries (LTI). This built on the achievement of five million work-hours with zero LTI in 2011. Albawaba Business
