Russia finds continued economic embargo on Cuba intolerable

Russia finds current economic embargo against Cuba intolerable and unacceptable, spokesman of Russian Foreign Ministry Alexander Lukashevich said on Thursday over forthcoming debate on October 28 over a UN draft resolution on lifting US economic, trade and financial blockade from Cuba.
“Sanctions are not the best way to settle current problems,” the diplomat said. “One politician compared sanctions with unsuccessful experience of diplomatic settlement of problems,” he added.
The diplomat also noted that people preferring economic restrictions actually pursue other goals rather than political settlement. “This is a deadlocked policy that does not meet goals and tasks for development of inter-state relations,” he noted.“I even affirm that many countries imposing such restrictions forget about principles laid down not only in the UN Charter, but also in the Helsinki Final Act.”
“You are aware of our position which President Vladimir Putin had voiced. We believe that continued economic embargo against friendly Cuba is intolerable and absolutely unacceptable in terms of international practice of relations between different countries,” Lukashevich added.
The Foreign Ministry’s spokesman also noted that most UN member-states adhered to this position in the vote.
“As for unilateral sanctions the United States, the European Union and several other states imposed on Russia our attitude has been recently voiced again by President Putin and Foreign Minister Lavrov that we find them as an illegitimate instrument which does not fit the logics of relations between different countries,” he noted.
