India has decided to import 1, 000 tons of onion at 685 U.S. dollars per ton, in a bid to rein in retail prices of the commodity.
A government committee held a meeting, where it has been decided that a tender will be floated for the import of onions Saturday, a senior official said Friday.
"The committee has approved the offer for import of 1,000 tons of onion at 685 U.S. dollars per ton," Indian Agriculture Additional Secretary Avinash K Srivastava told the media.
The imported onions would be supplied to state governments after seeking their requirements, the official said.
Onions prices have touched sky-high rates in retail markets across India.
