Minister of Supply and Internal Trade Mohammad Ali El Sheikh on Wednesday said the government is committed to importing wheat under strict Egyptian specifications, which take human health into consideration.
Addressing parliament, the minister said that Egypt would have fallen in numerous troubles had it stopped the import of wheat with slight amount of ergot fungus.
The state had to accept about 480,000 tons of wheat or else face international arbitration cases, he said.
The government reached a settlement on the issue after a number of states announced they would boycott Egyptian made products, he said, stressing there will be no harm to citizens' health.
He urged the media to raise awareness among people and refrain from ‘poisoning’ the public opinion.
