Chechnya’s leader announced plans on Thursday to build a new airport in Russia’s North Caucasus republic to handle increasing volumes of international passenger traffic. Funds for the project in the Chechen capital, Grozny, will be provided from extra-budgetary investment.
“Prominent business leaders, politicians, scientists and cultural figures regularly come to Grozny," republic head Ramzan Kadyrov wrote on his Instagram account. "Forums and scientific conferences featuring dozens of countries are held here and naturally, they need comfortable conditions. The most important thing is that traffic volumes have grown,” he said, adding that the new airport would be “a miracle of architecture”.
Chechnya is constantly developing, undertaking a range of large-scale social and economic programmes financed both from the budget and through investment support. Projects to build an international university, a network of hotels and trade centres, mountain resorts and development of special economic zones are currently underway.
A special venture capital fund has been established in the republic to finance these projects and there are plans to attract more than $3 billion of extra-budgetary investment.
State programmes are expected to create more than 25,000 new jobs. House-building is developing fast in a three-year project to construct apartments for about 460,000 families.
Local authorities also plan to expand education infrastructure. Some 64 new schools for 33,000 pupils will be built. This year, 455 general education institutions have opened their doors for 239,000 pupils.
