Budapest - AFP

Hungarian film director Miklos Jancso, who won Best Director at Cannes in 1972, has died aged 92, his family said Friday. Jancso gained international fame from the mid-1960s onwards for his stylish films and won the Cannes prize for his film "Red Psalm". In 1990 he received a Golden Lion lifetime achievement award at the Venice Film Festival. He twice won Hungary's Kossuth Prize, the highest state decoration for cultural achievement. A critic of the communist regime during the 1970s and 1980s, he also joined a civil group that campaigned for the legalisation of marijuana.
