More than 2,500 people are feared dead after a massive landslide hit a village in northern Afghan Badakhshan province on Friday. Provincial Governor Shah Wali Adib said it was estimated that more than 2,500 were missing, and it is feared that most could not have survived the more than 20 meters of debris which buried hundreds of houses. The following is a list of world's major landslides or mudslides in recent years: In 2010: On March 1, a massive landslide occurred in the district of Bududa in eastern Uganda. The landslide destroyed three villages. Rescuers recovered 94 bodies, with about 320 villagers reported missing. On April 5, floods and mudslides in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro killed at least 212 and injured 161. More than 100 were reported missing. On Aug. 6, abrupt torrential rains triggered mudslides in India-controlled Kashmir's Leh region, killing at least 166 people. Another 400 were reported missing. On Aug. 8, massive rain-triggered mudslides hit Zhouqu county of Gansu province in northwestern China, killing at least 1,467 people and left 298 others missing, presumed dead. On Dec. 5, landslides caused by heavy rains in Bello municipality in Colombia's northwestern province of Antioquia left at least 88 people dead. In 2011 On Jan. 11, floods and landslides devastated a mountainous region near Brazil's Rio de Janeiro, killing at least 806 people and leaving 300 missing. Starting from July 26, torrential rain battered South Korean capital Seoul and surrounding regions, causing dozens of landslides and flash floods that killed at least 62 and left 9 missing. In 2012: On Jan. 25, two villages were buried in a massive landslide that struck the region northwest of Port Moresby, capital of Papua New Guinea. At least 40 people were killed and about 20 others were reported missing. On June 26, floods and landslides triggered by heavy rain in southeastern Bangladesh killed at least 88 people, and injured more than 10. In 2013: On June 16-18, landslides and floods caused by heavy rains hit the northern Indian states of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh, claiming at least 822 lives. On Sept. 14, a landslide caused by tropical storms buried a village in a mountainous region in Mexico's southwestern state of Guerrero, leaving at least 68 missing.
