Strong quake hits far Eastern Russia

A strong earthquake jolted near the eastern coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula in eastern Russia on Sunday morning local time, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said. The epicenter of the 6.1-magnitude tremor, which occurred at 0315 GMT, is located 268 km southwest of Il'pyrskiy at a depth of 17.4 km, according to the USGS. An earlier alert from the agency placed the magnitude at 6.5 and the depth of the epicenter at 51 km. No immediate tsunami alert has been issued.
