Houston - Xinhua
Governor Mary Fallin of the US state of Oklahoma on Friday issued a statewide burn ban, as the region suffers from extreme heat and drought conditions. The decision was based on an analysis of fire activities and predictions that the current drought conditions will continue, according to The Oklahoman, the state's largest daily. "Extreme heat and ongoing drought have created conditions very conducive to wildfires," Fallin was quoted as saying. "A statewide burn ban is now necessary to reduce the risk of preventable wildfires and to protect lives and property." The governor urged everyone in Oklahoma to do their part to help prevent fires and keep their families and businesses safe from harm. Effective immediately, the ban prohibits campfires, bonfires, fireworks and any outdoor burning in all 77 counties of the state. Earlier this week, Fallin also declared a state of emergency because of the high temperatures and worsening drought conditions. On Friday, a wildfire swept through rural woodlands north and south of Oklahoma City, burning down a couple of houses as firefighters struggled to put it under control.
