Kuwait - KUNA
Kuwait Municipality is studying prospects of launching vital ventures such as waste recycling and processing disposed materials to generate power, said the Director General on Wednesday. Ahmad Al-Sebeeh, in a statement at opening of "the sixth conference and exhibition for managing waste," revealed that the municipality had granted licenses to companies for launching such projects. The municipality seeks to safeguard the environment and realize sustainable development through execution of a number of vital ventures aimed at resolving the environmental problems, namely disposal of solid waste. Electric power can be generated at special incinerators, he said, indicating future plans to set up such smelters. Such a project can contribute to minimizing the allotted plots of land for dumping in addition to securing alternative energy resources. The conference steering committee chairman, Jamal Omran, said the annual event is aimed at examining latest innovations in waste management, modern recycling techniques and minimizing pollution. The convention agenda tackles municipal, industrial, medical, hazardous and nuclear waste, in addition to construction, demolition and electronic waste. Adnan Hussein, of the environment department of the municipality, revealed a plan to build plant for disposition of solid waste, forecast to start operating by 2019
