Hurricane Kirk weakens over Atlantic

Hurricane Kirk weakened over the Atlantic Ocean Friday, with no coastal warnings or watches in effect, forecasters said. The Category 1 hurricane was 1,015 miles south of Cape Race, Newfoundland, and 1,365 miles west of the Azores, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said in its 5 p.m. EDT advisory. Kirk was moving north at 13 mph with maximum sustained winds of 90 mph. The storm was expected to turn northeast and weaken during the next 48 hours. The storm appears likely to become non-tropical Sunday, hundreds of miles off Newfoundland. It might hit the British Isles as a non-tropical storm next week. South of Kirk, Tropical Storm Leslie was moving west-northwest at 18 mph. NHC forecasters predicted the storm will veer northwest Sunday with the center passing well north of the Leeward Islands. Some strengthening was forecast during the next 48 hours that could see Leslie become a hurricane. No coastal watches or warnings were posted for Leslie. Its maximum sustained winds were 65 mph.
