Rome - UPI
The wreck of the Costa Concordia off the Italian coast appears to have done little environmental damage, Greenpeace reported Friday. Greenpeace said detergents, ammonia and other chemicals have been leaking from the half-sunken ship, the Italian news agency ANSA said. But its report said the sea floor and marine ecosystems near the ship remain healthy. The ship, carrying more than 4,000 passengers and crew, struck a rock Jan. 13 off the island of Giglio on the first night of a six-day Mediterranean cruise, killing 32 people. The captain, who allegedly made an unauthorized decision to sail close to the island, faces criminal charges. Italian officials said six companies invited to submit bids for removing the vessel had responded with plans by the Friday deadline. Four other companies declined to participate. Also Friday, a court ruled the contents of the ship's "black box" can be turned over to investigators.
