Rome - ANSA

Emilia-Romagna, Italy, was still gripped with fear on Monday, as tremors continued after Sunday's earthquake that killed seven people, injured dozens, left over 4,000 homeless and caused massive damaged. Many people in the region slept in cars overnight with over 100 aftershocks coming in the 24 hours that followed Sunday's earthquake, which was 5.9 on the Richter scale and took place at 4:03 in the morning. A number of historic castles, churches and towers were among the buildings destroyed or damaged by the quake and its aftershocks. The government is set to declare the affected areas an emergency zone at a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday. Premier Mario Monti left the NATO summit in Chicago early following the earthquake and Saturday's bomb attack outside a school in Brindisi in which a 16-year-old girl was killed. It was the worst earthquake in Italy since the 2009 L'Aquila quake that killed 308 people.
