Rome - ANSA

Sixteen Loggerhead turtles, under the watchful guard of volunteers, hatched and made their way to sea on Tuesday in the southern Italian region of Puglia. Ninety eggs were deposited on the shore near the city of Lecce on the Torre S. Andrea beach July 14 and have been under constant supervision since then. The Loggerhead sea turtle, also called Caretta turtle, is an endangered species found in the Mediterranean sea and has a low reproductive rate.
