Togolese and world football is in mourning following the death last Tuesday of Affoh Korke after a long illness. He was only 42. One of the most prominent figures in the national game, Korke played a leading role in the development of football in Togo for many years. His absence will be sorely felt in Togolese sport as a whole and at the offices of the Togolese Football Association (FTF), where he held a number of positions. “It is with great sadness that I have learned of the death of Mr Affoh Korke, a member of your football association’s executive board, the President of the Competition Organising Committee, and Vice-President of the Youth, Beach Soccer and Futsal Committee,” wrote FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter in a letter of condolence to Gabriel Ameyi, his counterpart at the FTF. “On behalf of the international football family and in my own name I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to both you and the Togolese Football Federation,” added Blatter. In lamenting the untimely death of a loyal servant of the game in Togo, Mr Ameyi said: “Affoh was a fine, upstanding member of the association and gave sterling service to Togolese football. He will be greatly missed.” FIFA
