Serena Williams needed three sets to defeat Yaroslava Shvedova Monday and reach the quarterfinals at Wimbledon. The American star, who has won the tournament four times, sailed through the first set, then had a fight on her hands before escaping with a 6-1, 2-6, 7-5 victory over the player from Kazakhstan. Conditions at Wimbledon were cold and rainy, delaying some matches. Williams' quarterfinal opponent will be the winner of a match between defending champion Petra Kvitova and Francesca Schiavone. Another player advancing to the quarters was Austria's Tamira Paszek, a 6-2, 6-2 victor over Roberta Vinci of Italy. Paszek next plays either Victoria Azarenka or Ana Ivanovic.
