Olympic air put on auction

Fans of the 2012 London Olympics and its athletes can acquire memorabilia even if you are not in London — online through the Official London 2012 auction site. There are many strange things on sale though. According to The Independent newspaper, some vendors are offering bottled Olympic air — one of them claiming to have been “collected at the entrance to the Olympic Park only days ago.”  That one, the paper says, has yet to attract any bids. One seller put an optimistic starting price tag of £49.99 ($77.71) on an empty plastic water bottle that could be bought immediately for £99.99 ($155.45) otherwise. There was even a crumpled tissue on offer. “This was the tissue I used at the 2012 Opening Ceremony to wipe the seat with, it has some of the molecules of the Olympic atmosphere attached to it and I shall be sealing it in a plastic wallet so you can show it to your Grandchildren and so on,” declared “captainjay1701.” Not surprisingly, no one expressed interest in that item either. As of Friday, an Olympic torch signed by Bradley Wiggins, the British cyclist who capped a win in the Tour de France with a gold medal in London, had been sold for more than $20,000, The Daily Telegraph reported.
