At the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2006 in Russia, Korea DPR thrashed China PR 5-0 to cruise to the title. Two years later they reached the final once again, only to lose 2-1 to USA in Chile. A rerun of that match is now on the cards at the current edition of the tournament in Japan, although this time it is in the quarter-finals. Having won three of the five titles between them, elimination for either side at this stage would be a huge disappointment. Four years ago in La Florida, Santiago, superb goals from Alex Morgan and Sydney Leroux - both recent gold medal winners at the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament London 2012 - secured the coveted title for USA. Cha Hu Nam scored a late consolation for the North Koreans. This Friday the two teams come face-to-face once more. As in Chile, it promises to be an exciting spectacle, with neither side considered favourites. It remains to be seen whether the match reaches the heights of four years ago, but you can start getting in the mood by reliving the highlights of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2008 final one more time.
