Pretoria - Arabstoday
Unbeaten league leaders Kaizer Chiefs once again found knockout football not to their liking Friday, making a first-round exit from the South African League Cup after losing 3-2 at Bidvest Wits. Chiefs, the most popular and successful football club in the country, also fell in the first round of the season-starting Top 8 Cup before going on a seven-game unbeaten championship run to establish a four-point advantage. Mid-table Wits resisted calls to move the cup tie from their 5,000-seat home ground in Johannesburg and it paid off as they built an early two-goal lead and snatched a vital third on 70 minutes soon after Chiefs reduced arrears. Substitute Lehlohonolo Majoro struck a second goal for the under-strength visitors 18 minutes from time to create a tense finish in which both teams wasted chances and Wits had Zimbabwe midfielder Tinashe Nengomasha red carded. Former Newcastle United and Norwich City midfielder Matthew Pattison, Burundi star Papy Faty and Letsie Koapeng were on target for Wits and Bernard Parker scored Chiefs' opening goal. Another four ties are scheduled for Saturday with title holders Orlando Pirates facing a tricky test at Black Leopards while Top 8 Cup winners Moroka Swallows visit resilient Maritzburg United.
