Indianapolis - UPI
The NCAA announced Thursday the playoffs for the Football Championship Subdivision would be increased from 20 to 24 teams starting in 2013. Eight teams in what were once known as the Division I-AA playoffs will receive first-round byes under the new format. Those teams will also host second-round games. The Pioneer Football League, made up of schools that do not offer football scholarships, will become the 11th conference to earn an automatic playoff bid for its champion. The other three new spots will go to at-large teams. There are 122 teams in the FCS level of NCAA football. Champions from the Ivy League and Southwestern Athletic Conference do not participate in the playoffs.
