London - Arabstoday
Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes has heaped praise on his side for their stunning reaction to falling behind against Stuttgart yesterday. Stuttgart, who had only won five times in 45 visits to Munich down the years, took the lead at the Allianz Arena through Martin Harnik's 25th-minute effort, but Bayern hit back in emphatic fashion to win 6-1. All six of Bayern's goals came in a 19-minute spell either side of half-time with Thomas Muller (two), Toni Kroos, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Luiz Gustavo and Mario Mandzukic the men on the scoresheet. Heynckes said: "We were too passive in the first 20 minutes and lacked the required aggression. The 1-0 woke my team up and they responded, which is the way we expect things to be. From then on, we played an excellent game. You could see how much the players were enjoying themselves. I am delighted with the 6-1 win, but even more so for the way in which the team is working every day." Schweinsteiger, who started his first game of the season yesterday, shared his coach's thoughts and predicted a brighter future for the club who have been waiting over two years for a piece of silverware. "We reacted very well to going behind and, in the past, we had not come back from a goal down too often," he said on his club's website. "Today we did that in an impressive way. I can see the potential, the quality and a great deal of hunger within the side." That includes new arrival Javi Martinez, who tasted the atmosphere of the Allianz Arena for the first time yesterday. "People have welcomed me with open arms," said the Spaniard. "I am delighted, it was a great win and the crowd was fantastic." There were no smiles in the Stuttgart camp after their second defeat of the season left them rooted to the bottom of the table. "This is a bitter defeat for us," said coach Bruno Labbadia.
