Atletico Mineiro's advantage at the Brazilian Campeonato summit was cut to one point on Wednesday night as they were held to a goalless draw at Bahia while Gremio edged bottom-of-the-table Atletico Goianiense 2-1 to climb to second.
Elano's early brace put Gremio in control and, although Marino da Silva halved the deficit in the 25th minute, there was no way back for the lowly visitors. Atletico Mineiro later failed to find the breakthrough against Bahia, and could as a result surrender to spot on Thursday when Fluminense host Santos.
Fourth-placed Vasco da Gama were held to a 1-1 draw at Nautico Recife, and required a 54th-minute equaliser from Fellipe Bastos to secure the point after had to come from behind to secure the point after Kieza had put the hosts ahead three minutes before half-time.
The match between fifth-spotted Sao Paulo and sixth-placed Internacional ended 1-1, Maicon securing a point for the hosts in the 19th minute by cancelling out Dagoberto's seventh-minute goal. Andres D'Alessandro saw red for Inter 17 minutes from time.
Clarence Seedorf netted twice in as many minutes as Botafogo battled from a goal down to win 3-1 at Cruzeiro and climb above their opponents into seventh in the standings. The Dutchman's quickfire double overturned Tinga opener, with Jadson's second-half strike sealing the away win.
Caio bagged the game's only goal a minute after the interval to earn Figueirense only their fourth win of the season - 1-0 at home to Corinthians - while Uendel's strike midway through the first half handed Ponte Preta a 1-0 win at Flamengo.
Finally, Portuguesa capitalised on the fifth-minute dismissal of Coritiba wing-back Sergio Escudero to overcome the visitors 3-0. Bruno Mineiro was on target in the 12th minute and again at the start of the second half, with Ananias grabbing a third in the 56th minute.
