New York - UPI

Fourth-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer and No. 9 John Isner of the United States each moved on to the second round of the U.S. Open with wins Wednesday. Ferrer took advantage of 31 unforced errors by South African Kevin Anderson in his 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) decision at Armstrong Stadium in New York, while Isner fired 20 aces in his 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 7-6 (11-9) triumph over Belgium's Xavier Malisse. Ferrer's next opponent will be Igor Sijsling of the Netherlands, who bested Spain's Daniel Gimeno-Traver 7-5, 6-3, 6-4. Isner, meanwhile, will next meet Finland's Jarkko Nieminen. Also Wednesday, No. 8 seed Janko Tipsarevic rallied from two sets down for a 4-6, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 comeback triumph against France's Guillaume Rufin -- the fifth time in his ATP Tour career the Serb has overcome such a deficit. Other Day 3 winners included 2001 U.S. Open champion Lleyton Hewitt, Luxembourg's Gilles Muller, German Cedrik-Marcel Stebe, American Brian Baker, Argentine Leonardo Mayer, France's Benoit Paire and Slovenian Grega Zemlja.
