A second appearance by bomb disposal experts in as many years created consternation on the opening night of the Monaco Grand Prix, as they carried out a controlled explosion on a suspect package. A plastic container was found discarded near the media centre after much of the F1 fraternity had left for parties or their overnight accommodation, but several journalists tweeted that they had been evacuated while the detonation took place. Onlookers were also twice moved away from the area in order for the experts to go about their work. The box was later found to contain nothing more sinister than cables but, given the clientele attracted to the jewel in F1's crown, no-one was prepared to take the risk that it could have been anything more dangerous. Last year's incident involved a bag left lying around the paddock on race day but, on that occasion, no explosion was deemed necessary.
