Spain coach Vicente del Bosque confirmed on Monday that his retirement is "close" and that next year's European Championship is likely to be his last major tournament.
However, speaking at the launch of his book 'Winning and Losing' at the headquarters of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) outside Madrid, Del Bosque said he would have discussions before making a final decision.
"My retirement is close. If everything goes according to plan it will be the end," Del Bosque said of Euro 2016, when Spain will seek a third consecutive European Championship.
"But the motive of this book is not to say goodbye, because there are still six months to go until the Euros and a lot will happen in that time.
"I am a man of the Federation and I have to speak to them before taking a final decision."
In his new book, Del Bosque indicates that he intends to retire after the finals in France next June and July, having been in charge of La Roja since 2008.
Del Bosque, who took over from the late Luis Aragones after Spain's triumph at Euro 2008, is a hugely popular figure in Spain after leading the national team to a maiden World Cup victory in 2010 and a second consecutive European Championship two years later.
However some felt a fresh start was needed after Spain's failure to advance beyond the group stage at last year's World Cup finals in Brazil.
Spain could become the most successful side in European Championship history if they can win the title for a third consecutive time, and fourth overall, in France next year.
