London - Arabstoday
Kaizer Chiefs coach Vladimir Vermezovic slammed his team despite a 2-0 win over Bloemfontein Celtic today that kept them in the South African Premiership title hunt. The most popular football club in the country are trying to become champions after a six-season barren run and although five points and three places behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns with nine rounds left, they have a game in hand. Serb Vermezovic was furious at the finishing of his players at Peter Mokaba Stadium in northern city Polokwane as they should have buried mid-table Celtic under a goal avalanche instead of relying on one in each half. "On several occasions it was more difficult for my players to miss than to score but they missed. It was unbelievable to watch and I cannot be satisfied with this performance," lamented the coach, who is in his third season at Chiefs. "The only good thing was collecting three points and I promise our supporters we will fight to the end in this title race. Among our remaining fixtures is a home game against Sundowns." Midfielder Lucky Baloyi took advantage of a retreating Bloemfontein defence to race through and unleash a right foot drive over Stemmer after 36 minutes that put Chiefs ahead. Celtic came close to levelling twice before Lehlohonolo Majoro added a second goal on 53 minutes by diverting a superb Mandla Masango cross over the line with his thigh. The poor form of three-time champions SuperSport United continued as they were held 0-0 at lowly Platinum Stars while the dwindling title hopes of Ajax Cape Town suffered another blow with a 1-0 loss at Free State Stars. Dutch coach Martin Stekelenburg was angered by the eighth-minute dismissal of defender Keamogetse Wolff for abusive language and the defeat left the 2011 league runners-up behind Orlando Pirates 10 points adrift of Sundowns. Thamsanqa Gabuza scored five minutes from time with a shot that deflected past giant Gambian goalkeeper Demba Touray to give Golden Arrows a vital 2-1 win at Santos in a clash of clubs too close to the relegation zone for comfort.
