Former US Open champ Jim Furyk, who withdrew from the BMW Championship after six holes, has been diagnosed with a bone contusion on his left wrist, the Golf Channel reported.
The 45-year-old American is ninth in FedEx Cup standings and assured one of the top 30 spots in next week's Tour Championship. However Friday's diagnosis throws into doubt whether he can play in Atlanta and in the Presidents Cup.
Furyk shot 59 at Chicago's Conway Farms Golf Club two years ago. It is the first time Furyk had to withdraw from a tournament since 1995.
If Furyk, the 2010 FedEx Cup champion, is unable to play in the October 8-11 Presidents Cup in South Korea, USA captain Jay Haas would get to make another pick to replace him.
Furyk had 12 top-10 finishes in 16 appearances in the Chicago event which started out as the Western Open. He posted a two-stroke win over Tiger Woods in the 2005 Western Open.
Furyk registered his first major championship win at the 2003 US Open.
