Paris - AFP
Biarritz won the 100th Basque derby with the last kick of the game on Tuesday as Julien Peyrelongue landed a penalty to beat Top 14 rivals Bayonne 21-19 and give the hosts only their second win in 11 matches. In a fiery encounter, three players were sin-binned while the father of Biarritz star Imanol Harinordoquy had to be wrestled to the ground after running on to protect his son in the first punch-up of the match in the sixth minute. Bayonne looked to have sealed a win against their bitter rivals when Benjamin Boyet converted Thibault Lacroix's try six minutes from time but Peyrelongue landed his fifth penalty of the match to give Biarritz a crucial win. The victory took Biarritz off the bottom of the table, although they could return to the bottom should Lyon beat Montpellier on Wednesday. Christian Gajan, Bayonne's director of rugby, was outraged by Harinordoquy's father's behaviour. "I find his behaviour deplorable that he came onto the pitch to defend his son by boxing with (Jean-Jo) Marmouyet at the beginning of the match," he said. "You could have been mistaken for believing it was a youth match between two local villages, it was a scandalous episode." Harinordoquy junior preferred not to comment, the Biarritz captain opting to talk about the positives. "It's a really huge relief, and it relaunches our championship campaign," said the 31-year-old, who had an outstanding World Cup in the knockout stages. "We were at the bottom of the stairs before the match, we have climbed the first step, now we have to climb the second one against Montpellier on Sunday." Biarritz took an early 9-3 lead thanks to two penalties by Peyrelongue and a drop goal by veteran French international Damien Traille -- Bayonne's penalty coming from the boot of Boyet. Traille -- making his return to the side after taking a break following the World Cup -- added another drop goal soon afterwards to extend the lead to 12-3 before fellow French international Fabien Barcella was penalised and Boyet made no mistake with the penalty. However, the half ended badly for Bayonne as prop Renaud Boyoud was sin-binned for the first 10 minutes of the second-half after throwing a punch -- one of many during an ill-tempered first period but the first one to be penalised. Biarritz failed to finish off Bayonne as Peyrelongue added just two penalties to make it 18-6 but the visitors were given hope when Biarritz lock Jerome Thion was yellow-carded in the 55th minute for a high tackle. Boyet landed the resulting penalty to reduce the deficit to just nine points with 20 minutes remaining. And the visitors took the lead when they scored the first try six minutes from time despite again being down to 14 men after former All Black Troy Flavell was sin-binned for a high tackle on English back Iain Blashaw just 10 minutes after coming on. However, Boyet's clever kick over the Biarritz backline should have been gathered by Biarritz's Zimbabwe-born American winger Takudzwa Ngwenya but instead it was Bayonne's South African wing Sam Gerber who gathered and passed inside to Lacroix who touched down. Boyet added the conversion to make it 19-18 to Bayonne but Peyrelongue was to steal the glory and give them the local bragging rights.
