London - Arabstoday
Mario Gomez has warned his Bayern Munich team-mates they still have it all to do after hitting four goals in their 7-0 rout of FC Basel last night. The result reversed a first-leg deficit and sent Jupp Heynckes's team into the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. "We have big ambitions, but we've achieved nothing yet," said Gomez, who is now just two shy of the competition's 12-goal leading marksman Lionel Messi. The result was the biggest all-time victory in the knockout phase of the Champions League, surpassing Bayern's 7-1 defeat of Sporting in 2009. Gomez has now scored seven goals in his last two games, having netted a hat-trick when Bayern hammered Hoffenheim 7-1 at home on Saturday. Dutch winger Arjen Robben, who scored twice against Basel, has now scored four in two outings, while Thomas Muller was also on target against the Swiss side. "It was fun to play in that," said Robben. "To score seven goals in a Champions League match speaks for itself. Fourteen goals in our last two games after our defeat at [Bayer] Leverkusen speaks volumes for the way we have played. "We have to stay focused. It would be good to get Barcelona or Real Madrid in the next round, but we'll take whoever comes." Making a statement President Uli Hoeness believes Bayern are showing what they can do after poor recent form dropped them to second in the Bundesliga. "Now we have shown twice what this team is made of," he said. "It was fun to watch. "Perhaps we need the pressure when our backs are against the wall. In the games when things haven't gone so well, we didn't run as much as in the last two matches." Bayern's performance was clinical, and after 90 minutes the Basel defence was cut to ribbons, especially down their left flank where Franck Ribery provided three crosses for Gomez to score. "We wanted to show from the beginning what we could do," said captain Philipp Lahm. "After the break we showed, just as we did on Saturday, that we can take a team apart."
