Chelsea star Terry stands trial for racism

Prosecutors accused English soccer star John Terry of using a racial slur in response to taunts about his affair with the girlfriend of a former teammate. Terry went on trial Monday for uttering the slurs towards Anton Ferdinand in the 85th minute of the Oct. 23, 2011, match between Terry's Chelsea and Ferdinand's Queens Park Rangers, The Daily Telegraph reported. Terry denied the accusations, saying he used the phrase ironically in response to Ferdinand accusing him of making racist comments earlier in the match. The trial is expected to last five days.
