Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo
Jerez de la Frontera - Arab Today

Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo claimed his first pole position of the season with a new track record time of 1min 37.910sec for the Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez on Saturday.

The two-time world champion had been fastest in three of the four practice sessions on Friday and Saturday morning and continued that form into qualifying to break the record set by world champion Marc Marquez in claiming pole position last season.

Marquez was second fastest despite being bothered by a broken finger on his left hand, whilst Italian Andrea Iannone completed the front row of the grid.

Championship leader Valentino Rossi was unable to match the pace of his teammate Lorenzo as he could only manage fifth on the grid behind Pol Espargaro.

It was confirmed on Friday that Lorenzo would be staying with Yamaha until the end of his contract in 2016 despite a disappointing start to the season that has seen him slip 29 points behind Rossi after three races.

And he said the confidence shown in him by the team has played a big part in his return to form this weekend.

"We're back. I have a lot of confidence in the bike, the team and myself. The contract renewal has helped me a lot and, as I always say, it is Sunday when the points are dished out and what better way to start than on pole," he said.

There were doubts over whether Marquez would even be able to ride this weekend after he broke the pinky finger in his left hand in a training accident last week.

The double world champion admitted he didn't want to push too hard in qualifying for fear of another crash and was therefore happy to be the best of the rest behind Lorenzo.

"I am very happy because I knew it would be very hard to get on the front row and we have managed that.

"Tomorrow will be a tough and long race, 28 laps, it appears as if Jorge is a little bit ahead but we will fight to be on the podium."

Earlier, French teenager Fabio Quartararo claimed the first Moto3 pole position of his career for Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez.

The 16-year-old beat out British championship leader Danny Kent by over a tenth of a second with Portugal's Miguel Oliveira starting from third.
