Chennai - AFP
Murali Vijay became the first Indian to hammer two centuries in the Indian Premier League as Chennai Super Kings stormed into final with an 86-run win over Delhi Daredevils on Friday. The opener cracked four sixes and 15 fours in his quickfire 58-ball 113 as defending champions Chennai posted a commanding 222-5 off their 20 overs before dismissing Delhi for 136 at the Chidambaram stadium in Chennai. Chennai will take on Kolkata Knight Riders in the final at the same venue on Sunday. Vijay, who also scored a hundred in the 2010 edition, was run out off the last ball of the innings while coming back for a second run, but not before helping his team post the highest total of the ongoing tournament. Delhi never looked like achieving the stiff target and were bowled out in the 17th over, with spinners Ravichandran Ashwin taking three wickets and Shadab Jakati two. Sri Lankan Mahela Jayawardene top-scored for Delhi with a 38-ball 55, hitting two sixes and four boundaries. The Chennai batsmen, led by Vijay, earlier dominated the Delhi attack which was without South African paceman Morne Morkel, the tournament's leading bowler with 25 wickets in 16 matches. Seamer Varun Aaron bagged two wickets but conceded 63 runs in four overs, the most ever by a bowler in an IPL innings. Chennai made a solid start after being put in to bat as Vijay and Australian Michael Hussey (20) added 68 runs for the opening wicket to put their team on course for a big total. Vijay hit the first two balls of the match from off-spinner Sunny Gupta for fours and then smashed three boundaries in an over from Aaron. The Chennai opener's best came when he cracked two sixes and as many fours in spinner Virender Sehwag's over. He completed his century off 51 balls, the fastest of the ongoing tournament. Vijay put on 69 runs for the second wicket with Suresh Raina (27 off 17 balls) and 39 for the fifth wicket with West Indies' Dwayne Bravo, who smashed a 12-ball 33 not out with the help of two sixes and three fours. Brief scores: Chennai Super Kings 222-5 in 20 overs (M. Vijay 113, D. Bravo 33 not out, S. Raina 27, MS Dhoni 23, M. Hussey 20; V. Aaron 2-63) beat Delhi Daredevils 136 in 16.5 overs (M. Jayawardene 55, R. Taylor 24; R. Ashwin 3-23, S. Jakati 2-40) by 86 runs.
