Twins hire Steinbach, Brunansky, Cuellar

Former all-stars Terry Steinbach and Tom Brunansky and ex-minor league pitcher Bobby Cuellar were named Minnesota Twins coaches, the team said. Steinbach, 50, will begin his first coaching job as a bench coach and catching instructor next season, the Twins said on their website. The Minnesota native played parts of 14 seasons with the Oakland A's and Twins. The catcher was a three-time all-star who was part of Oakland's 1989 World Series champion team and has assisted the Twins during spring training since he retired in 1999. Brunansky, 52, a 1985 all-star selection and member of Minnesota's 1987 World Series championship team, will be hitting coach after finishing his second full year coaching in the Twins organization with Triple-A Rochester in 2012. An outfielder, he played 14 years in the majors with the Twins, Boston, St. Louis, Milwaukee and California Angels. Cuellar, 60, the new bullpen coach, was a pitching coach for Texas, Montreal and Seattle. He pitched in the minors for 11 seasons and spent nine seasons with the Minnesota organization, the last four as Rochester's pitching coach. Twins Manager Ron Gardenhire said Scott Ullger will coach first base and handle outfield instruction, Joe Vavra will be third-base coach and infield instructor, and Rick Anderson will keep his job as pitching coach. The moves came after the Twins released bullpen coach Rick Stelmaszek, third-base coach Steve Liddle, first-base coach Jerry White and head athletic trainer Rick McWane. McWane's replacement has not been named.
