Sauber chief executive Monisha Kaltenborn said on Monday the Swiss outfit were interested in signing German Michael Schumacher when his contract with Mercedes expires in 2013. Schumacher, 43, is reportedly still undecided about his future after learning that he will be replaced by Lewis Hamilton, who has signed three-year deal with Mercedes and will drive alongside Nico Rosberg. “Of course it’s nice to think of such a possibility, that we can ask ourselves if we can get a seven-time world champion when he is on the market,” Kaltenborn told the sportsdaily Bild, adding: “Michael has until now been with just big stables which we can’t compare ourselves to”. Team principal Peter Sauber has already said that he would “immediately” sign Schumacher if he were available. Schumacher, however, has also been linked with a return to Ferrari. But with his family home in Switzerland, a final hurrah at Sauber, if not a move into Mercedes’ management team, seems more likely.
