Washington - UPI
Top-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska withdrew from the BMW Malaysian Open tennis tournament Friday and rain again played havoc with the schedule. Radwanska cited a right elbow injury in giving a semifinal berth to qualifier Hsieh Su-Wei. Radwanska, 17-3 this year, was coming off a win in Dubai last week but had her schedule in Kuala Lumpur compressed because of rain. Her first-round match was pushed back one day and had to be completed Thursday after rain interrupted play Wednesday. She finished off that win and claimed a second-round win Thursday but said Friday she was unable to play further. Rain again was an issue Friday with one match completed, another stopped in the second set and the quarterfinal between second-seeded Jelena Jankovic and No. 6-seeded Ayumi Morita postponed until Saturday. Fifth-seeded Petra Martic ousted No. 3-seeded Peng Shuai 4-6, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4 in a 2 1/2-hour match. Each player won 98 points and had three breaks but Martic had two breaks in the third set to advance. Eleni Daniilidou had taken a 6-2, 3-2 lead over Olivia Rogowska when play was stopped. They are first up Saturday to complete their quarterfinal. The winner of that match will take on Hsieh in the semifinals, also Saturday, and Martic plays either Jankovic or Morita.
