Pettitte breaks left ankle in Yankees win

New York Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte will miss at least the next six weeks of the Major League Baseball season after suffering a broken left ankle in a 5-4 victory over Cleveland on Wednesday. The 40-year-old southpaw was injured when struck by a bouncing ball that was hit by Casey Kotchman to open the fifth inning. Pettitte threw one pitch to the next batter before manager Joe Girardi removed him from the game. "I saw him throw a couple pitches and he said, 'I'm OK. Let me try it,'" Girardi said. "But I saw him throw the one pitch and when he had to put a little more intensity into it he kind of hobbled. That made me take him out." Pettitte, who will have the ankle placed in a walking boot and use crutches, went down only hours after the Yankees placed pitcher C.C. Sabathia on the disabled list. Pettitte is 3-3 with a 3.22 earned-run average in nine starts this year for the Yankees, who have the best record in Major League Baseball at 46-28.
