
Pakistan captain Misbah-ul Haq won the toss and sent New Zealand into bat in the first of five one-day internationals in Dubai on Monday.
Both teams shared the preceding three-Test and two Twenty20 series 1-1.
Pakistan included all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez as batsman despite his suspension over an illegal bowling action.
New Zealand's opener Martin Guptill and all-rounder Corey Anderson were missing due to fitness problems.
