Notre Dame gained the top spot of the Bowl Championship Series rankings for the first time in school history Sunday following a weekend of football upsets. Thanks to its blowout win over Wake Forest and losses by Oregon and Kansas State, the undefeated Fighting Irish (11-0) shot up from No. 3 to No. 1, garnering a .9973 rating in the computerized system. The Irish will seek to complete their first undefeated season since their last national championship in 1988 Saturday against traditional foe Southern California. Alabama, meanwhile, moved up two spots to No. 2 after its dismantling of West Carolina Saturday, compiling a .9333 rating. The Crimson Tide had held the top spot until losing to Texas A&M the previous week. Claiming the third spot was Georgia, which also moved up two slots, while Florida jumped from sixth to fourth. Previous No. 1 Kansas State fell to sixth after a one-sided 52-24 defeat to Baylor. Former No. 2 Oregon slipped to fifth in wake of its loss to new No. 8 Stanford. Louisiana State was seventh, with Texas A&M and Florida State rounding out the Top 10.
